Milestones: the Game of Projects is an effective way to learn how to measure performance on your project. Although the most powerful lessons come when you see how effective (or ineffective!) your approach was, you will also get answers to these important questions: Does working overtime provide a net gain? Or a net loss? Can performance be measured when activity durations are highly variable? When should you add a resource? Shed a resource? How valuable is historical data? Milestones is an experiential learning tool that allows you to test out your ideas in a safe, realistic environment. The object of the game is to maximize your score by making appropriate trade-offs among scope, cost, schedule, and risk. Most other project management simulations ask you to solve a predefined problem to teach you a predefined lesson. Milestones is different -- it challenges you to develop a robust strategy that can withstand the random vagaries of a real project. As part of a team of two to four, you will start by developing a plan to meet the project's objectives. During the game, you will monitor performance against your plan and take corrective action when appropriate. You may also need to respond to technical glitches, or to changes that require replanning. In addition, you will learn the basics of the earned value performance measurement technique. You can even use this valuable but often misunderstood technique to predict cost and schedule results during the game. Milestones can be run as a standalone event in both half-day and full-day versions. It can also be licensed for use as a module within a longer management development program.
